6th Grade Technology Class
Sixth grade technology class is focused on exploring mechanisms and finding out how things move the way that they move. This is meant to be a very exploratory class. The students will be using the Lego Mindstorms kit to build and program Lego robots that will do some type of behavior. Students will also explore how and why gear ratios can make things move faster or slower.
Within the nine week course, students will do many hands on projects.
Unit 1: Gear Ratios
The gear ratio unit will cover using gear ratios to determine if wheels will move faster or slower. The students will also learn the difference between torque and speed. This will be applied with a hands on activity where they will use materials to mock up the actual gear ratio. The mock up will have a motor attached so that the gears actually spin, the student will be able to tell that a gear ratio is for speed or torque.
Unit 2: Intro to Lego Robotics
The Intro to Lego Robotics unit will cover building some simple mechanisms and different mechanisms that will make the students think about how things are designed the way that they are. This unit will include the Lego Activity Sheet project that will have the students build 18 simple mechanisms that will show students how the Lego's can be used in unconventional ways.
Unit 3: Robotics Engineering Curriculum
The Robotics Engineering Curriculum utilizes the Carnegie Mellon software will the Lego kits. This allows for the students to build some fairly complex project that will be controlled by the Lego NXT microcontroller. They will be building multiple robots that will have many linkages and simple mechanisms from Unit 2: Intro to Lego Robotics. The students will learn the basics of programming and the logic behind how programming works.
Unit 4: Custom Lego Robot
Students will be given a challenge and be asked to design a robot to complete the challenge. The students will be able to use any of the Lego parts and to program the robot to do what they want it to do. The challenges range from moving blocks from one point to another, to building a dragster robot, to building a sorting robot that will sort between different colored marbles.
This class will have a course exam at the end of the nine weeks. We will review for the exam the day before the test.
