7th Grade Technology Class
Seventh grade technology class is focused on exploring design and how programming works. This class is meant to be an exploratory class where students learn by doing. Many of our class periods are spent on working with the VEX Robotics System to build, test and refine different robots that the students will create. It's been proven that students tend to learn more by having hands on experiences and having some variety to their learning style. This class will allow them to apply math and science concepts with hands on activities.
In the seventh grade we put more emphasis on the programming aspect of the VEX Robotics. We spend about two-three weeks on a programming unit that will introduce students to sensors and how they work. In industry, almost every machine now has sensors on it, so it is important that students understand how they work and why they are used. We will also program the robots to drive through an obstacle course.
Within the nine week course, students will do many hands on projects within the following units.
Unit 1: Introduction to Robotics
Unit 2: Squarebot
Unit 3: Programming
Unit 4: 7th Grade Challenge
Unit 1will focus on describing what a robot actually is and where they are used. We will work through some interactive videos and PowerPoints that will help us to understand what are robots and some that the students may have seen.
Unit 2 will focus on building a Squarebot robot. This robot is a very simple square shaped robot that will allow the students to get some hands on experience for building VEX robots and also being able to drive them with a remote control.
Unit 3 will focus on programming the Squarebot. We will be using two different types of programming. Dead reckoning programming is programming where we will tell the robot motors to move for a certain amount of time instead of using sensors to determine how long the motors will move. We will also be using sensors on the robot to control the robot. These sensors will be used to control the robot and tell it when to stop. We will also discuss how the robot moved when we used the remote control.
Unit 4 will be the 7th grade challenge. The challenge is a game that I give the students and they must complete a robot that will be able to play said game. They will have a packet with the rules so that all the students have the same constraints. The students will work in their groups and complete the design process while they design, build and test their robot.
This class will have a course exam at the end of the nine weeks. We will review for the exam the day before the test.
